FULL STORY
A Life of Medicine,
Meaning and Belonging
My father was Ambassador Salimou GUEYE, a Senegalese diplomat and a poet of the Negritude generation. He believed that a people who recover their heritage and culture recover everything else in time. In 1981 he published a book of poems for my mother. He died in 2023.
Medicine gave me the honor of my father’s legacy and the responsibility of my heritage. In college, medical school at the University of Virginia, a master’s in public health at Johns Hopkins University’s health and international health, and residency in obstetrics and gynecology at Johns Hopkins Hospital. It was an excellent training, and for a number of years I loved my work.
Then it stopped being enough, and I have spent every year since trying to hold both.
